THE SILENT DESTROYERS

Termites cause billions of dollars in damage each year. Typically, they feed on wood but can also damage other types of items such as insulation and filtration devices. Termites are known as the silent destroyers because they can leave little signs of their presence. They consume plant materials that are cellulose based which means that any home, despite construction can be inviting to termites.

There are over 2000 different species of termites in the world, however, there are three major types found in the United States.

• Subterranean Termite
• Drywood Termite
• Dampwood Termite

Termites vary in size from about 1/4 of an inch to 1/2 of an inch in length. The queens and kings are larger and can reach over an inch long. The workers are soft bodied and pale in color. There are some termites that have wings, and they are referred to as the reproductives.

Wood makes up the majority of their diet however these pests will eat other materials including paper, plastic and even drywall. Most termites feed on dead wood but there are some species that will attack living trees. Food preference varies based on the species of termite. Subterranean termites prefer softwoods, however, that won't stop them from invading just about any species of wood. Dampwood termites like to stay close to the ground as they prefer moist, decaying wood. Alternatively, Drywood termites are often found in attics and don't require much moisture in their food source.

Here are some tips when it comes to termite control:
  • They are often discovered during March - May, this is mainly caused by the increase in temperature.
  • Termites are often drawn to light, and can often be seen around windows and doors.
  • Removing your house of termites requires special skills, and it is not advised that you treat the house yourself.
  • Termites can return even after the initial infestation, and it is worthwhile to look into a long-term treatment plan
  • Chemicals used do not harm humans, pets or the environment.
  • "Spot" or partial treatments can be attractive because of the lower price, however you run the risk of not having all of the termites eliminated from your property.
